The Martin Family Accepts Shopping Challenge

Even though kids are still basking in the freedom of summer vacation, the start of another school year is drawing closer with every passing week. Like many moms, Taunya Martin has already begun making a mental checklist of everything her four children will need when they return to Holy Trinity Catholic school this fall.

“By the time the back to school sales begin, I already have a pretty good idea of what we need and where I will get it. Getting the school supplies, backpacks and clothes our four kids will need isn’t something that I wait to do a week before school starts. I start thinking about getting ready for the next school year almost as soon as summer vacation begins”, Taunya explains.

Martin FamilyTaunya, her husband Shawn and their four children, Zoe (10), Tommie and Charlie,(7) and Jimmie (5), are taking part in the back-to-school shopping challenge. Two other local families are also participating in the challenge, the purpose of which is to prove that most of what we need for back to school, or any other time of year for that matter, can be found in Huron.

“I definitely believe in shopping local. I was born in Huron and we are raising our children here. We want our community to grow and be the kind of place our kids will want to live and raise their families. One way we can help to make sure that happens is by supporting Huron businesses and putting as much of our money back into the local economy as possible.”

The Back to School Shopping Challenge coincides with “Be A Lucky Duck-Shop Huron & Win”, the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau campaign to raise consumer awareness of the existing retail options available in Huron and the economic impact of doing businesses locally. Residents have an opportunity to win up to $25,000 by submitting receipts for goods and services purchased in Huron between now and August 7th, 2015.

The Martin’s will be sharing their back to school shopping experiences over the next few weeks, including photos and videos documenting where they shop and what they purchase. Follow their progress, and that of the other participating families, on Performance Radio, in the Plainsman and in the Here in Huron and Huron Now blogs.
